Got Old VTech or LeapFrog Toys? Now You Can Recycle Them for Free

When I look back on all of A.J.’s old electronic devices and his very first tablets or electronic games as a preschooler, I either donated them or passed them along to a family friend. But then what? I don’t know where they ended up when they eventually stopped working. They’re considered eWaste. They’re the electronic devices we use, get tired of, and often don’t know how to dispose of. Or if we toss them in the trash, they’ll be in landfills for more years than we want to count. Adults may be guilty of collecting phones, tablets and laptops that sit around. Unfortunately, our children are not too far behind. The devices they love can be donated or re-sold, but at some point, they end up in the trash. Just in time for the 2020 holiday season, VTech and LeapFrog partnered with a recycling company so you can toss your child’s old electronic learning tools without feeling like you could do something greener.

Eligible Toys for Recycling

A select group of VTech and LeapFrog toys can be recycled at no cost to you. Chances are you have at least one of them sitting around in a toy box. Eligible VTech and LeapFrog toys range from infant, to toddler to preschoolers. Here’s the rest of the eligible toy list.

How to submit old toys

It’s a four-step process to ship the old VTech and LeapFrog products from your house (or school/preschool) to TerraCycle.

  1. Sign up for an account in TerraCycle.
  2. Collect and box eligible toys.
  3. Log-in to TerraCycle and print a pre-paid shipping label.
  4. Add shipping label to the box and send it via UPS.

According to TerraCycle, “Once collected, the VTech and LeapFrog electronic learning devices and electronic toys are cleaned and melted into hard plastic that can be remolded to make new recycled products, such as park benches and picnic tables.”

Your Old Toys Give Back

Besides the great feeling of knowing your child’s old toys won’t just sit in a landfill, they also benefit charitable organizations. The more eligible toys you send, the more money can go to charities: “Shipments in the VTech & LeapFrog Toys Recycling Program can be any weight to earn points, and 100 points per pound will be awarded.”

A select group of eco-friendly non-profits partnered with TerraCycle. For each point you earn by recycling your old toys, you can support their efforts to clean the environment.

  1. Great idea! We took ours to goodwill and other donation spots. Good to know they can be recycled as well.

  2. I get my nephew digital devices as gifts all the time and I had no clue how to recycle them. I’ve never heard of this program being offered by a brand. More brands need to follow.

  3. Eliminating and overseeing trash has gotten one of the significant issues in this day and age. We can do a great deal about it.
