I had the opportunity to interview actress Busy Philips from ABC’s Cougar Town as a special guest on Huffington Post LIVE. She’s a new spokesperson for Banana Boat sun protection. Side note: I bought some Banana Boat products at Target on sale last week and got a $5 Target gift card I hope to give away soon. Back on topic…I asked Busy her thoughts on Gwyneth Paltrow’s comments comparing her life to a “working mom.” In case you don’t follow celebrity moms (like I do) back in March, Gwyneth told E!
“I think it’s different when you have an office job, because it’s routine and, you know, you can do all the stuff in the morning and then you come home in the evening.”
She added:
“When you’re shooting a movie, they’re like, ‘We need you to go to Wisconsin for two weeks,’ and then you work 14 hours a day and that part of it is very difficult. I think to have a regular job and be a mom is not as, of course there are challenges, but it’s not like being on set.”
In Gwyneth’s defense, she said the demands of movies are why she’s made about one film a year since becoming a mother and she wasn’t diminishing the challenges of working a 9-5. My question about Gywneth and Busy’s answer is at starts at the 10 minute mark so you’ll have to fast forward!
I have a bit of an obsession with celebrity moms like Beyoncé and her amazing baby weight loss. When I went to Los Angeles last year for my #FiguringOut40LA trip, I grabbed an interview with Van Lathan from the TMZ tour about the “best celebrity moms.” Pardon the color on the video below:
She is such a great comedic actress. I love that she appreciates her situation and says that she’s got it made as a working mom. You asked her such a great question, Joyce!
I think everyone has their own struggles and sometimes we’re too quick to compare and tear each other down.
Moms have a hard job period, the difference is the normal hard working mom does not have a nanny or help like the celebrities do, sure they need them because they travel, etc but motherhood is not an easy job.
The bottom line is don’t judge–everyone has different situations-we need to remember that –great interview!
Such a great comedian!
Thank you so much for asking this question! I think that Gwenyth is in her own world and no shade, but she doesnt know what its like to be a normal person, let alone a normal Mom.
I love Busy! She’s just so real and down to earth and she is working that yellow dress. I’m glad that Busy understands her situation and appreciates it for what it is, but the truth is that every mother has a different journey and Gwyneth is talking about very different scenarios.
Wow her answer was refreshingly honest! I also love how she said stay at home moms have a different truth and reality also, so she understands that sahms have challenges also. All of us moms have our own unique challenges, no matter our situation.
