Book suggestion: “What your pediatrician wants you to know”

I noticed on the Mommy Talk Show Fan Page that many of you had helpful hints when I asked for suggestions on how to give A.J. some relief from his cold or cope with teething. Isn’t it horrible when your little one is sick or uncomfortable?

It made me think of the health advice I’ve gotten in the past and how valuable it was. First, I absolutely love A.J.’s pediatrician. I’m not going to share her name or the practice because I don’t want her to get bombarded. But I can share that when I was pregnant I went to the pediatric practice’s open house where expectant parents could tour the office and ask questions. Your pediatrician should offer something similar so you can find the right fit for your family. Second, I always bring a list of questions to A.J.’s pediatric visits. There are so many things that happen or change for your child in between visits. It’s impossible to remember everything, so write it down!

When I lived in Ohio I found a great family doctor who became a close family friend. Dr. Virgie Bright Ellington (www.drvirgie.com) also wrote a valuable book, What Your Doctor Wants You to Know But Doesn’t Have Time to Tell You. After I told  Dr. Virgie, a mother of two boys, about MommyTalkShow.com she suggested the chapter “What Your Pediatrician Wants You to Know.” In the interest of full disclosure, I haven’t read the book yet but it’s on my reading list for 2011. Here she is on NY1 explaining the value of her book:
