Teaching Self-Confidence to Our Children

Letters to Our Children

This month I’m joining fellow parenting bloggers for “Letters to Our Children”( inspired by  LaShawn Wiltz at Everyday Eyecandy) where we pour our hearts out to little people who run our lives. First, check out my letter to A.J., then follow along to the next letter at the end.

Featured - Discipline 5 Year Old

Dear A.J.,

This month you’ve cried more tears than I’d like –  because you were scared or worried. Each tear was a waste.

Yes, you bumped your head when you feel off of the monkey bars. But you were also frustrated by the littlest things.

You didn’t win. You cried.

You couldn’t solve the puzzle on “Wheel of Fortune.” You cried.

You didn’t feel like you could pedal your bicycle up the hill. You cried.

You got scolded. You cried.

cute now criminal later

Mama and Dada will not make life easy for you. Life is tough. You have to be strong. You ARE strong.

You ARE smart.

You ARE funny.

You ARE friendly.

You ARE our blessing from God.

You ARE the best son we could ever dream of having.

Every time I made you pedal up the hill without my help, each tear you cried wasn’t worth it because your skinny legs are strong enough to climb a thousand hills in a day if you wanted to.

Remember that.

Mama will NEVER lie to you.

I love you and your stinky feet.

Love, Mama

(I can’t wait to see your face when you read this)

  1. AJ is the Cat’s Meow hunny! He’s a wonderful little boy. I look forward to seeing him grow and all the things you’re going to share about his experience.

I’m always telling my kids “Don’t tell me what you can’t do, show what you can do.” It’s definitely important for us as parents to assist our children with building their self-confidence and squashing the fear that’s only in their heads. Sometimes that means letting them cry out while they spread their wings and fly. AJ is beyond adorable!

Life is tough and I think if we teach them that GENTLY when they are young, they will grow up to be amazing adults.

I think teaching our kids to be confident is one of the greatest responsibilities we have. Our kids are going to need confidence to navigate the rough world they’re going to be coming into later.

  5. I remember when my youngest daughter would always tell me, “Mommy I can’t do it!” “Mommy, I’m a loser!” I had to reassure her that yes, she can do it and keep working hard at her goals. There will be times when it’ll be tough, but she got to keep working hard at it. This goes for anyone.

  6. It’s important to help kids grow up to be confident in themselves and their abilities! Sometimes they won’t like it but they will thank you in the long run!

  7. Raising our kids to be confident is so important. They may think we are being to hard on them right now, but when they are older they will appreciate it.

  8. Life is tough. It’s our job as parents to encourage our children and help give them the confidence and support they need to continue on and try again. When children know we support and love them no matter what – we all succeed!

  9. We’re all cheering you on A.J.! It’s hard to push our kids past their limits and past their fears. To be gentle and to be stern at the same time is a difficult skill.

  10. This is so sweet. My parents wrote in a journal little funny things I did or said, and I treasure it so much. I know your kiddo will too!

  11. Teaching your child confidence by believing in and telling them you are aware of their skills is so important. What a wonderful idea it is to write a letter explaining love, understanding, and encouragement.

  12. What an amazing idea. He is ADORABLE, and I love that he’ll have this to look back on one day. It’s so easy to take pictures and remember the “big” moments, but the small, everyday moments are just as important. With you investing the time and important lessons in him so early on, he is destined to be confident and successful!

  13. What a cute letter. These letters will be great keepsakes for him when he is older.

  14. This is so very sweet. Life can be so tough, especially for kids that are learning how to live in this rough world.

  15. Ahhh yes, I remember this phase! I banned the word can’t in our house! Ever time he starts to say it he gets a look and he knows! AJ is growing so fast!

  16. Kids constantly learn when they are young. The do need to know they are special and loved to build their confidence

  17. It is tough to see our children struggle, but they will learn to get up that hill. They will learn the answer to the puzzle. I hope he does read this & sees the confidence you have in him.

  18. Self Confidence is SO important. a few of my kiddos experienced bullying so this is huge for me, to make sure I really focus on this with them. The world is a hard place so being confident is a must!

I agree that self confidence is very important and we should start building them up as young as possible. I love the idea of a dear child letter.

  20. Confidence is one of the most important thing we need to teach our kids. This is a great letter to your child.

  28. This is such an adorable letter! He is going to have big smiles when he reads this. I’m sure he knows you all are trying to teach how to survive in this cruel world. He will appreciate it when he is older.
